Welcome to Sportstar‘s LIVE coverage of IPL 2021, Match 8 between Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings. This is Santadeep Dey bringing you all the action as it unfurls at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
PBKS 81/6 in 16 overs: Thakur, meanwhile, continues to be a bit expensive when compared to the rest of his teammates. A short delivery has been pulled away by Shahrukh in absolute disdain towards midwicket. The tactical break has been taken.
PBKS 73/6 in 15 overs: Moeen’s length delivery has been dispatched deep into the stands near midwicket as Shahrukh hammers the first ball with the turn. An otherwise decent over from CSK.
PBKS 64/6 in 14 overs: Another of Jadeja’s blink-and-you-miss overs. Ashwin and Shahrukh do not take any undue risk and rightly so… especially after what they saw in the last over.
PBKS 61/6 in 13 overs: Moeen goes fuller and makes Richardson pay for being over ambitious! The Australian, who tries to go big but ends up missing the line of the ball completely, sees the Zings light up. Murugan Ashwin is the new man in.
PBKS 56/5 in 12 overs: Richardson finally decides to take on Jadeja. Has absolutely creamed this drive through cover to pick up four runs.
PBKS 52/5 in 11 overs: A decent first over, this, from Moeen. Concedes only four singles.
PBKS 48/5 in 10 overs: A confident appeal as Jadeja’s first delivery goes to crash onto Richardson’s pads. The umpire doesn’t seem to be too interested though.
PBKS 45/5 in 9 overs: Richardson welcomes Thakur with a glorious boundary. Shahrukh ends the over on a high again, muscling a fuller delivery through extra cover. Time for the first strategic timeout of the day.
PBKS 34/5 in 8 overs: Spin has been introduced and Jadeja is extracting some serious turn off the surface straightaway! That, however, doesn’t deter Shahrukh who goes the distance off the last delivery.
PBKS 26/5 in 7 overs: A seam-up 140 kmph delivery from Chahar sees Hooda go through with his shot early nevertheless. Ends up playing it into the safe hands of du Plessis at short cover. With 4/13, this is Chahar’s best-ever IPL figures.
PBKS 26/4 in 6 overs: Hooda breaks the shackles with a boundary. Stands tall and punches Thakur’s second ball through cover. Three more runs come off the over as CSK sees through a brilliant PowerPlay.
PBKS 19/4 in 5 overs: Chahar’s back into the attack. More fielders have been stationed on the offside for Gayle. And the ploy works and how! A knuckle ball this from Chahar and SIR JADEJA… YOU ABSOLUTE BEAST… He runs in to take an absolute blinder, diving forward at point. Wait, we aren’t done yet. Another one bites the dust as Pooran holes out to Thakur at deep backward square leg.

PBKS 18/2 in 4 overs: Curran continues to impress. Five dots and a single off the over.
PBKS 17/2 in 3 overs: With the fielder at fine leg within the 30-yard circle, Gayle has gone exploring off an inswinger. The big man follows it up with another boundary – a streaky one at that which flies over the head of Raina at first slip. KL Rahul’s gone. That’s a big, big wicket! Jadeja with yet another of his pinpoint direct hits. Hooda comes to the crease.

PBKS 7/1 in 2 overs: Curran to share the new ball. Strays away from the line after bowling a couple of good deliveries to pitch outside leg. Rahul has flicked it handsomely down fine leg to pick up his first boundary.
PBKS 2/1 in 1 over: CSK is off to a brilliant start as Chahar strikes to remove Mayank for a two-ball duck! Was an absolute peach of a delivery that swung viciously away from the right-handed batter to hit the top of off stump. Gaikwad, meanwhile, drops a dolly at backward point as Gayle heaves a sigh of relief…
The “Kings” take on each other in a titanic game of thrones. Who will come out on top tonight? Only time will tell…
Out come the umpires. Dhoni leads his side onto the field as well. Rahul and Mayank to open for Punjab. Chahar to bowl the first over. Let’s play!
Punjab Kings: KL Rahul (w/c), Mayank Agarwal, Chris Gayle, Deepak Hooda, Nicholas Pooran, Shahrukh Khan, Jhye Richardson, Murugan Ashwin, Riley Meredith, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh
Chennai Super Kings: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Faf du Plessis, Suresh Raina, Moeen Ali, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni (w/c), Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran, Dwayne Bravo, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar
WHAT THEY SAID
Rahul: We did well in the last game and we should try and assess the pitch and put some runs on the board. Pitch looks good. When any set batter is batting it is tough to control and I try to encourage my bowlers and even if they go for runs it’s okay. Supporting them and backing them is really important. No changes for us. We are going with the same team.
Dhoni: We will bowl first. Cricket is a mental game and adaptability is a key factor. Overall, it’s more a mental game than the physical aspect. (The pitch) looks a bit tacky. There’s a bit more grass. Bit of dew settles down a bit in the second innings as well. The first few overs are really crucial. We are playing the same team.

“We have a fresh pitch for today’s game. There is a nice, green tinge. I think it will be a good surface. It may not have as much seam movement. What we have seen in the last game here is good skills from the pacers. The dew starts to fall in the back-end of the contest and yorkers will have to come in big time if you are a bowling side,” reckons Ian Bishop.

Having earned a win in a last-ball thriller, something that K.L. Rahul’s outfit failed to do consistently in the latter half of IPL 2020, Punjab Kings will return to Wankhede Stadium as a much more confident unit against Chennai Super Kings today.

The Super Kings will be keen on getting their act together to open the account. The side needs to get the combination right to attain the desired results. But Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men will be far from fielding the ideal combination, with pace duo of Lungi Ngidi and Jason Behrendorff missing out due to mandatory quarantine period after travel.
It will be interesting to see if the Super Kings accommodate Imran Tahir, the veteran leggie, to bolster the bowling department. The lack of wicket-taking options, especially with the dew at the Wankhede Stadium making life difficult for finger spinners, was one of the vital aspects of CSK’s inability to defend a total of 188 in its opener against Delhi Capitals.
Punjab Kings, despite starting the tournament with a narrow win against Rajasthan Royals, will be hoping that its new signings – Jhye Richardson and Riley Meredith – will adapt to bowling with a wet ball after conceding 104 runs off their eight overs combined.
