This is Santadeep Dey bringing you LIVE commentary of IPL 2020: MI vs KKR in Abu Dhabi.

LIVE COMMENTARY

KKR 99/5 in 16 overs: Morgan has to be the key for KKR, this point onwards, with not many deliveries remaining in the innings. Meanwhile, Bumrah is mixing it up well, too, to outwit both batters.

KKR 95/5 in 15 overs: Krunal to bowl out as well. He goes at the rate of a run a ball and it is time for the second strategic timeout of the innings.

KKR 89/5 in 14 overs: Chahar to bowl out. Cummins and Morgan stick to the singles and doubles as the Rajasthan spinner finishes with excellent figures of 4-0-18-2

KKR 82/5 in 13 overs: Cummins decides to go after his countryman Coulter-Nile right from Ball 1. He hits a four a little wide of mid-off and then later follows it up with a 65-metre six over deep square leg and another boundary towards mid-off.

KKR 66/5 in 12 overs: Chahar concedes only three off that over. KKR won’t be looking to take any risk now that there is not much batting left to come.

KKR 63/5 in 11 overs: Russell frees his arms to flay Bumrah away behind point. Is this the Jamaican’s night? Well, jinxed it! A shorter delivery surprises Russell and the edge balloons right into QDK’s gloves. The Bumrah factor continues to get the better of Dre Russ in T20s! This is the third time that the India pacer has removed Russell in the IPL. Pat Cummins walks in.

KKR 57/4 in 10 overs: Morgan steals a cheeky boundary, brooming Chahar’s wrong’un towards fine leg. That and a couple from this over.

KKR 51/4 in 9 overs: Krunal will continue. He has conceded only nine off his first two overs. However, the economical show doesn’t continue as Dre Russ has muscled him for an 81-metre maximum over cow corner. It is the first six of the day as well. And immediately after that, a strategic timeout has been taken.

KKR 43/4 in 8 overs: KKR losing its way yet again! Gill, looking to go for a biggie, has played it straight to a leaping Kieron Pollard at deep mid on. Meanwhile, Chahar makes it two in two! What a game this is turning out to be… The ball becomes slower after hitting the surface and Karthik has been castled. Chahar is on a hattrick as Dre Russ walks out to the centre; he doesn’t get it but what an over this has been for MI.

Rahul Chahar

KKR 40/2 in 7 overs: Karthik times it magnificiently to end Krunal’s over on a high pulling it to the ropes between deep forward square leg and the sweeper.

KKR 33/2 in 6 overs: Coulter-Nile gets his very first delivery slightly overpitched and Gill greets him with a glorious on drive for a four. The Australian gets his revenge, two balls later, albeit by dismissing the Punjab batsman’s partner Rana. He bowls it short and Rana, always known to have a weakness against the bouncers, edges it to QDK. Dinesh Karthik is the new man in and quite evidently, Mumbai is on top at the end of the PowerPlay.

KKR 28/1 in 5 overs: Rohit Sharma introduces spin from one end. Krunal Pandya to bowl. We see two half-opportunities after two loose shots from Gill strays wide of the bowler and then dips short of Suryakumar at mid on.

KKR 25/1 in 4 overs: Nitish Rana comes to the creasea and Mumbai almost makes it two in two! A direct hit would have seen Shubman way out of the frame but Ishan Kishan couldn’t get the throw on point. Rana picks the gap on the onside to hit Bumrah for a four off the last delivery.

KKR 18/1 in 3 overs: Boult continues the good show! The Kiwi did bowl one at Tripathi’s body but the latter couldn’t pull it hard enough and Hardik Pandya did a good job in the deep to keep it down to one run. Boult got another short, but Tripathi was alert this time around to swat it between the mid-on and midwicket area for a fine-looking four. However, the very next ball, we witness something magical. Suryakumar Yadav pulls off a blinder of a catch at backward point to send Tripathi back. The expression on the face of the bowler and the batsman said it all!

KKR 12/0 in 2 overs: James Pattinson’s like-for-like replacement Nathan Coulter-Nile is into the attack. The Australian pacer is playing his first game this season. He gets an outswinger off the very first ball and in an effort to replicate that line, he ends up bowling two back-to-back wides down leg side. A sloppy misfield from Jasprit Bumrah hands KKR and Gill their first boundary through the midwicket region.

Shubman Gill

KKR 3/0 in 1 over: There is a hint of swing straightaway and it is precisely how Boult has been troubling batters in the PowerPlay, thus far, in IPL 2020.

Rahul Tripathi has been pushed back to the top for KKR and he will be opening alongside Shubman Gill. Some magical words from MI skipper Rohit Sharma before his squad take their respective positions on the field. Trent Boult to start proceedings with the new ball.

KKR INNINGS

WHAT THEY SAID

Rohit Sharma: We feel confident. We had a great last game here. It’s another challenge to come out and chase a target. It gives us another opportunity to come out and express ourselves. It is important to make sure everyone are fresh. We have one change. James Pattinson misses out and Nathan Coulter-nile comes in.

Eoin Morgan, KKR captain: We are gonna bat first. The wicket looks good and hopefully we can get a good score on the board. We have made two changes. Banton and Nagarkoti go out. Mavi and Green come in.

PITCH REPORT: “We have come one pitch across, so it does tweak the boundaries a bit. I like the pitch. This is a fresh wicket after four days. There is a little bit of a tinge of grass. Some new ball assistance will be there as well. There will be variable bounce and it will aid spin at the end. The dynamics have changed throughout the tournament. Above 90kph, the bowlers have picked up 14 wickets. There were 23 wickets below 90. The spinners have to be variant with their pace to get wickets,” reckon JP Duminy and Danny Morisson.   –  BCCI/IPL

WHAT THEY SAID

Eoin Morgan, KKR captain: DK informed yesterday that he would like to step back and focus on his batting as he feels that’s the best option for the team. It’s incredibly selfless and it also shows a lot of courage from him to do that, putting the team first ahead of him being skipper. I’m delighted to continue the leadership role within the side. We are only halfway through the tournament, we have showed some potential, haven’t quite achieved majority of it yet but tonight will be another good test and hopefully we’ll be up to it.

– The biggest news of the hour has been Dinesh Karthik handing over the Kolkata Knight Riders captaincy to England’s World Cup-wining captain Eoin Morgan to focus on his batting, only hours ahead of the match against Mumbai Indians. Read more on this by clicking here.

MATCH PREVIEW BY WRIDDHAAYAN BHATTACHARYYA

Kolkata Knight Riders is a talented side, but it looks less-than-half of what it is against four-time champion Mumbai Indians. On the hunt for its fifth straight win in Indian Premier League 2020, Rohit Sharma’s side will start as favourite at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Friday.

The build-up

By snatching two successive games from the jaws of defeat — against Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab — KKR earned a few points for its strategy to unleash ‘mystery’ spinners Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy at the back end.

However, Narine’s absence due to suspect action made KKR look ordinary against Bangalore. If KKR blindly trusts one bowler to win him games, it’s Narine. KKR could only dismiss two batters that night, and it lost the game by 82 runs.

Mumbai has been unstoppable with five wins in the first seven games at a handsome net run-rate of +1.327 (KKR net run rate reads -0.577).

It also beat table-topper Delhi Capitals this week. The defending champion is riding on the pace triumvirate — Jasprit Bumrah (11 wickets), Trent Boult (11 wickets) and James Pattinson (nine wickets). In fact, Bumrah is among the top five dot-ball exponents. He bowled 76 dots in the first seven games.

Mumbai also has a versatile batting department. Quinton de Kock’s return to form is good news; Suryakumar Yadav keeps getting better with every game and Rohit has scored 904 runs against KKR in the IPL.

KKR will have plenty to ponder. Rahul Tripathi, once again, had to sacrifice his preferred opening position to accommodate debutant Tom Banton in the last game. The England youngster failed to make it count and it is imperative newly-appointed skipper Eoin Morgan promotes Tripathi up the order to bat with Shubman Gill.

Tripathi averages 32.8 as an opener. He even scored 81 off 51 balls against the Super Kings. In all other positions, his average is below 20.

As for the spin department, Chakravarthy is far more unpredictable when bowling in partnership with Narine.

Key men

KKR quick Pat Cummins would like to make amends after the hammering in the first game. The Australian had conceded 49 in his three overs. He will be eyeing the most-prized wicket of Rohit. If the franchise decides to drop Banton, New Zealand speedster Lockie Ferguson will be a solid addition.

IPL 2020: We haven’t played our complete game yet, says Cummins

It is not easy to face the Mumbai pace trio in tandem when in a hurry to score. Andre Russell has not really got going this season and it will be interesting to see how he tackles the back-of-length deliveries.

“We will have to make amends after the first game when they beat us. We love playing in Abu Dhabi, so it will be a good game. In T20, in any game you play, it (wickets) is normally flat. There is never too swing or seam. It is quite a big field here and it is nice to bowl here. We haven’t played near our best cricket yet; complete a game that blows a team out of the water. We had no right to win against Chennai and Kings XI, but we still won. That’s a sign of a really good side.” – PAT CUMMINS
